What is Vision and Dental Insurance?
Vision insurance helps reduce the cost of eye exams, glasses, and contacts. Some policies may even discount on corrective eye care such as LASIK. Dental insurance covers routine check-ups and cleanings and offers discounts on basic procedures (usually up to 80%), such as fillings and root canals, and on major procedures (usually up to 50%), such as crowns and bridges. Some plans have an option to cover hearing as well. Vision and dental are NOT covered by Medicare.
Who Needs Vision and Dental Insurance?
Unlike health and car insurance, vision and dental insurance are not legally required. Vision and dental insurance is not a financial security, like health insurance, so is it really necessary? Honestly, that probably depends on you and your family. Children and seniors need to have their eyes checked more regularly, so if your family has members under either category, it might be a good idea to have vision insurance. Diabetics may also want to have vision insurance due to diabetes’s effect on eyes. Heart disease has been associated with poor dental health, so heart disease runs in your family, you may want to be proactive with frequent check-ups and dental insurance. Because vision, dental and hearing insurance are not covered by Medicare, anyone on Medicare that knows they already have issues with their vision, oral health and/or hearing should definitely look into it.
